The Mane Event: Making Waves

It’s no secret that big, good looking waves are making a comeback on the catwalk. What’s surprising is how easily the carefree look crosses over to another walk — the wedding aisle! Loose waves and curls give an ethereal, romantic look to a bride’s hair –- the perfect topper for the perfect gown. We talked to celebrity stylist Rochelle Weithorn to find the groove.

STEP 1 : Begin by washing your hair, says Weithorn. Add conditioner and concentrate on the ends.

STEP 2: Coat hair with a dime-sized amount of a silicone product such as Frizz-Ease Hair Serum to seal in moisture and keep frizzies at bay.

STEP 3 : Blow-dry your hair straight with a small, round brush, and then add another drop of silicone for extra shine. (If you have curly hair, don’t bother straightening it, and skip to step 4.)

STEP 4: Break out your curling iron — great for smaller twists and spiral curls — or electric rollers, which are ideal for long hair and loose waves.

CURLING IRON
Starting at the top of your head, spray a smallish section of hair with a setting lotion, roll it around the iron, hold it for a few seconds, and release. Curl close to the root rather than rolling hair up from the bottom, the way you did in seventh grade. It takes time and patience to curl your entire head of hair this way, so if your arms start to ache, enlist the help of a bridesmaid or friend. When you’re finished curling, you can opt to leave your hair in springy spirals, or you can use a little bit of gel and your fingers to loosen up too-tight curls.

ELECTRIC ROLLERS
The trick to working with hot rollers is to use a setting lotion specifically designed for heat, such as Thermasilk Heat Activated Shine & Shape Gel. Just blow-dry your hair following the directions above, then, starting at the top of your head, spray hair with the lotion, comb through, and start rolling. When your hair is completely set, leave it alone until all of the rollers turn cold. Remove them, lean your head forward, and run your fingers through your locks. Finish off with a spray and you’re ready to hit the aisle with luscious face-framing waves.
